Children's Grief Program Scheduled

Grinnell Regional Hospice is offering a Children’s Grief Program on Tuesday, June 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. This is a special program for children ages 6 -12 who are grieving the death of a loved one. A parent, guardian or adult support person should accompany each child.

During this program, children will meet in one group and adults in another group. Children will have the opportunity to share their feelings about the death of their loved one. Adults will learn how to help children grieve.

The Children’s Grief Program will be held in the Tomasek Room, Grinnell Regional Medical Center, 210 4^th Avenue, Grinnell. Participants may enter through the north entrance of the hospital.  Dinner will be provided and there will be a special activity for children.

SE*ED: A Couple of Yanks in Oxford and London

This year marks the 100^th anniversary of what was once known as “The Great War.” We now call it World War I. Roads Scholars is an organization that promotes adult traveling education, and puts on educational lectures at sites across the world. Roads recently hosted a week-long symposium on the history of the year 1915 in its relation to WWI.

Jim Ahrens and Shane Estes attended the Roads Conference and spent a week in Oxford, as well as several days more in London. They will be presenting on June 29 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center Senior Education Program. They will be discussing what they learned about history from the lectures, and what they learned about English culture from the time they spent as tourists and as students.

 This program is free and open to the public, and will be held in the Drake community library with refreshments beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Parking is available at the Drake Community Library, along Park Street, on Fifth Avenue, and in the First Presbyterian Church parking lot.

Great Support for the 2015 Golf Outing

Grinnell Regional Medical Center’s 26th annual golf outing will be Friday, July 10. Outstanding support from business sponsorships has made it possible for GRMC to offer more team prizes, increasing to three flights of three teams instead of two flights. The outing will also host eight pin events, putting contest, raffle for prizes and a 50/50 raffle. A best dressed and most obnoxiously dressed contest will also be held.

Medicare is the social insurance program funded by the U.S. government for citizens over 65 years of age. In these provisions, you are entitled to yearly Medicare Wellness Checks. These checks can be very important in preemptive diagnoses, and being aware of your health.

            On June 22, Roy Doorenbos, MD, Gayle Johnson, RN, and Brenda Peck, all with Grinnell Regional Family Care, are the featured speakers at Grinnell Regional Medical Center’s Senior Education Program. They will present information about service that you may be eligible for; how little it may cost; why it is important to be proactive in your healthcare; and why you should take advantage of this service.

GRMC's Communications Department Receives Multiple Awards This Season

In addition to the Aster Marketing award announced earlier this summer, the Grinnell Regional Medical Center office of communications and development has won three Healthcare Advertising Awards from Healthcare Marketing Report, and an APEX award for publication excellence.

The Healthcare Marketing Report is a publication that acts as a forum for discussion and recognition of marketing in healthcare. They give annual awards for excellence in various categories. APEX awards are given by Communication Concepts, an organization for best practices in publishing.

GRMC Board Members Receive Education Certification

Three members of Grinnell Regional Medical Center’s Board of Trustees have completed an education program hosted by the Iowa Hospital Association. Bill Menner, past chair, Ed Hatcher, and Rachelle Johnson, secretary, were the latest graduates of the Iowa Hospital Association’s Trustee Education Certification Program. A ceremony recognizing the graduates was held in Des Moines in April.

The intensive training program is intended to give board members of hospitals and healthcare providers the skills and knowledge to be better leaders for their organizations. The course focused on teaching the board members how to foster positive leadership, create programs that embrace and benefit the community, and to promote behavior that is in adherence with best governance practices for healthcare organizations. 

“Every hospital needs engaged, informed and vital board members to function as an integral part of the hospital leadership team,” said Steve Baumert, CEO of Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs and a member of the IHA Board, who presented the certificates.  GRMC’s three board members sought this certification to be that type of leader.

Menner, Hatcher, and Johnson are three of 18 board members that help to govern Grinnell Regional Medical Center. They are responsible for appointing missions, visions, chief executives, and some medical staff, as well as oversight of financial planning and many major hospital decisions.
