High School Students Taken Ill

Approximately 40 students and one teacher from Grinnell-Newburg High School were brought to Grinnell Regional Medical Center this morning for evaluation after they were exposed to sewer line gases.

Symptoms that individuals were experiencing include headaches, dizziness, and nausea. None of the symptoms were life-threatening and everyone who has been seen at this time have been treated and released. Treatment included oxygen and lab work in some cases.

A crack in the sewer line at the school caused the symptoms. The Grinnell Fire Department and staff with the City of Grinnell discovered and repaired the line.

Todd Abrahamson, school district superintendent, said all high school students and teachers have been sent home for the day as a precautionary measure. All other schools in the district will remain open.
City personnel continue to work with school officials to smoke the sewer system and check for any other leaks, says Dan Sicard, fire chief.

Abrahamson indicated that the school has had problems with sewer odors in the past, but even today the readings at the school are normal.
